The use of Natural Gas for power generation has advantages over coal based power. However, India has been meeting its power requirement predominantly from coal based generation. The major reason being the ease of availability of coal as against gas. Many of the gas based plants installed across India has been facing challenge of gas availability. The crude oil consumption in India is steadily increasing due to growth in transportation sector. India has been largely relying on oil imports due to stagnant domestic production. Such high dependence on imports coupled with price shocks in crude oil, led to increased vulnerability of Indian economy.
